Congratulations on your retirement! What an amazing accomplishment after many years of dedication and hard work. Here are five pieces of advice you may want to consider to make your transition to retirement an easy one: Give yourself time to adjust. Know that it may take some time to get used to this new way of living. Many self-identify who they are with their profession, so once you’ve stepped out of that identity, you may be looking to find the “new you.” It’s important to be patient with yourself and understand you may have mixed emotions as you settle into retired life. Stay connected with friends. A huge part of maintaining our identity comes from our friendships and routines. Not only do they keep us confident, but they can lower our stress levels and provide us with a sense of community. Keeping in touch with friends may help you feel more connected and provide the support that colleagues may have previously provided. Take time for you. Until recently, you may have had a certain amount of personal time that separated work life from personal life. With the likelihood of you now having extra personal time on your side, see how you can incorporate a hobby and/or leisure activity of your own. Maybe you’d find interest in joining a gym, taking up gardening, reading at the library, or volunteering at a local non-profit organization. Exercise. From keeping you in shape to releasing stress-relieving endorphins, exercise is always an important part of staying healthy physically, emotionally, and mentally. Find what you like and make it a regular habit. Have fun! Embrace this new freedom by digging up some of your life goals, your dreams, and anything new you want to try. Consider jotting down a list of things you would have liked to do previously but didn’t get a chance to do—like going back to school for a degree, auditing classes of interest, or volunteering with an organization you are passionate about. Once you figure out when it would be feasible to do them, you may find it very gratifying to start checking these accomplishments off your list!
